Firearm Safety and Storage Reminders
The Long Beach Unified School District informs and reminds parents and legal guardians of all students to review their legal responsibilities regarding the storage of firearms, as required by California law. Families must evaluate their personal practices and review the firearm safety and storage resources on this webpage to ensure compliance with California law.
California Penal Code Section 25100 mandates that ALL firearms, loaded or unloaded, must be securely and safely stored in all homes where children live or where children might reasonably be expected to enter. Gun owners can avoid criminal penalties by keeping their firearms in a locked container or securing firearms with a locking device that renders the firearm inoperable.
As a reminder, any person who negligently stores or leaves a firearm, loaded or unloaded, within reach or easy access of a child may be fined or imprisoned, or both, if the child gains access to, unlawfully brandishes or improperly uses the firearm. The criminal penalty may be significantly greater if someone dies or suffers great bodily injury as a result of the child gaining access to the firearm.

Safety and Security Overview
Our schools work closely with law enforcement every day, often behind the scenes, to keep our students safe. For safety reasons, we refrain from disclosing details of tactical protocols jointly developed with law enforcement and our Office of School Safety and Emergency Preparedness, but these frequently asked questions and answers describe our safety framework and key precautions. We continually revise and improve our safety plans using guidance from local and national law enforcement agencies and other national experts.
